Oral sedation can assist you to feel more relaxed during your dental treatment. You will remain semi-awake during the procedure but have little or no recollection of it. Your Dentist will discuss with you how this needs to be administered for your course of treatment.
The medication we use is Ativan. Ativan is administered in tablet form (1 – 2 tablets depending upon your age, weight and height). Effects of Ativan include drowsiness, nausea, loss of balance and unsteadiness on feet. The medication will be provided in our Clinic one hour prior to your scheduled appointment – during this time you will be monitored by our staff.
To help to prevent or reduce the symptoms of nausea it is recommended that you fast for 6 hours prior to the procedure or only eat a very light meal prior to your procedure.
It is important to note the effects of Ativan sedation will remain in your body for approximately 24 hours, therefore you MUST BE accompanied after your appointment as you will be unable to drive. Having someone stay with you for at least 24 hours following the procedure is also essential.
YOU MUST NOT DRIVE A VEHICLE OR OPERATE MACHINERY FOR A MINIMUM 24 HOURS AFTER TAKING ATIVAN
